PRODUCT REVIEW - NATUR VITAL HENNA SHAMPOO BLACK HIGHLIGHTS

Today, I choose to make a review about this product, Natur Vital henna shampoo , l  used during my relaxed hair years. You remember, I wrote a post about my damaged hair and what I did to save it. It was during that period, I quit using the 'mass produced' conventional shampoos that's common in most salons here. Then, I picked Natur Vital which served me about 2 years. I wanted something close to nature and as the name goes, I fell for it.

Natur Vital Henna Shampoo promises to
*Protect and brighten hair ccolour.
*Make hair shiny.
*Make hair healthy and soft

How it looks

Front

Back

Note: Opinions expressed are mine and my conclusions were made after extensive read.

Natural ingredients that make my eyes pop
*Henna extract
*Sunflower extract
The natural action of this two natural ingredients are written on the product label as you can see above.

Henna 'Lawsonia inermis' : It is a natural coloring agent obtained from crushed Henna leaves. Henna extract makes your hair shiny and strong and gives it lots of body. It also brightens natural and dyed hair colour.

Sunflower 'Helianthus annus L' : The extract from sunflower seeds is rich in polyphenols and protects the colour of natural and dyed hair from the aggression of ultraviolet rays and free radicals. Its action is increased by a UVA + UVB sun filter to protect yoir hair and prolong its colour.

Ingredients that are just okay
Sodium chloride, Glycol Distearate, Sodium PCA, Polyquaternium 10, Citric acid, PEG-55 propylene glycol oleate, Disodium ADTA and All the Cl.(Colors)

Ingredients that are a bit of concern
Sodium laureth sulfate - Most naturalistas opt for sulfate free shampoos because it can strip off all the oils from hair leaving it very dry and brittle. Others do not mind using shampoos with sulphates as long as their hair is rinse well and deep conditioned after shampoo to replenish and strengthen the hair.

Cocamide DEA - helps shampoo lather and foam like sulfates do too. It can leave the hair dry and studies show that it carcinogenic when combined with some preservatives.

Benzophene-4 -it protects products against photo degradation. There is fair amount of scientific evidence points to adverse effects with use and considered unsuitable for children under 2years who do not have developed enzymes for the breakdown of it.

The No - No ingredients
All the parabens - Ethylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben,  Methyl paraben. The parabens serves as preservatives but there are claims  that the parabens are carcenogenic and cause endocrine disruption, development and reproductive toxicity.
Phenoxyethanol - is an chemical alternative to parabens. FDA warns that it can be toxic with effects on brain and central nervous system even at moderate concentrations.

Pros
*It does restore damaged hair to healthy shiny look after several use, coupled with good hair care practice.
As you can see from the picture below it did restore my hair color from a former dark yellowish weak hair texture to dark shinier look and remained so even after i stopped using it for years.

*It is mild on hair.
*It is suitable for use on permanently dyed hair.
*Its not that pricey (At least, I could afford it as a student)

Cons
*It might stain a brightly colored cloth but it comes off easily when washed.
*Oh! The parabens. There should be a better substitute for it.

Will I like to use it again?
I would have said I wouldn't mind to use it, if I feel the need. But, I just found online that Natur Vital has a line of paraben-free hair products in abroad. So I am on a look out for it here.

Rating
4/5

How to properly take care of your hair under braids.

When tired of weaves and every day hairstyling, braids are next resort. Braids are great low manipulation protective styles that also help in hair length retention. But, you can feel regrets after taken them down, if you do not properly take care of your hair underneath your braids during the period you have them installed.

Your natural hair within the braids needs to be cleansed, conditioned, moisturised as you would when not in braids.

Cleansing
To cleanse your hair, you can use just water, liquid shampoo or dry shampoo. For easy application of the liquid shampoo, dilute and gently massage your scalp with your palm. Take care not to cut hair strands from the root with your nails or better still keep short nails, your hair will thank you for that. Cleanse your hair and scalp once every 5-10 days.

Condition
Follow up cleansing with conditioner. Dilute your conditioner to prevent build up on scalp and for easy rinse off.

Moisturize
The first few days of braid installation, you need to massage your scalp and hair at the roots and edges once or twice daily. This strengthens the roots  to prevent uprootof the hair due to tightness. After which you can reduce the frequency.

Have your hairspray filled and handy for during the day moisturizing. This will prevent your hair from drying out and breaking . Just shake and spray on scalp and the entire length of your hair in the braids.

For my present faux locs,  I have water 80%, coconut oil+olive oil+ Nature and Nurture 10-in-1 growth trigger oil for daily use in my spray bottle. Even when on faux locks and the length of my hair is not exposed as its in braids, I spray along the length of my hair hoping water get in . Point :Our hair thrives on moisture. The first few days of faux locs installation, I massaged my scalp  and hair at the roots with Nature and Nurture 10-in-1 growth trigger oil which calmed the tension at the roots and hairline.

Protect hair at night
Use your satin scarf or satin pillowcase if your satin bonnet cannot contain the braids. You can also raise hair to an updo, if its too long and wrap you hair round.
Remember to massage and moisturize hair before covering it.

Donts
Choose braid styling that are not tight, painful and pull on the edges. No need to risk loosing your natural hair from the roots to a momentary gorgeous braid styling. Infact it took me more than a month to be able to style my faux locs. and still wasn't too comfortable restyling it.

Optional tip
After wash, you can seal up moisture in exposed hair not scalp (so as not to clog the pores on scalp) with melted Shea butter or any natural butter. Rub between your palm to melt and rub along the length of you natural hair.

Throughout the period of your braids are installed, your hair will look really clean, neat and smell good. You might be tempted to leave your braids on for so long b. A maximum of 8 weeks for braids and 12 weeks for faux locs is okay. If you do not take it down at a reasonable time, breakage from hair matting can occur and benefits of length retention and growth will be forfeited.

I know you got it!

I hope you enjoy your braids and keep slaying!

The Worries and Fears of going on a Natural Hair Journey

If someone asked me whether, I will ever go on natural hair (thats never relaxing my hair) at the beginning of this year, my answer would have been a BIG NO.

Am aware about the natural hair movement that has been ongoing a long while. All over the world even here in Nigeria, ladies, especially the blacks are embracing the movement.

However, we must admit that it is one journey not everyone can embark on. Some , like I used to be, have worries and concerns about it. I hope you, naturalistas, are understanding and patient with them.

Our worries and concerns are real. Even if you, experts, know that some of this anxieties might be due to misinformation, I will like to give you a mental picture of what goes on in the minds of those who might not have said yes to the (Unrelaxed) natural hair life. Actually, this is how anxious I used to be about going natural.

Worries/Concerns/Fears

1. My very first worry is the pain I do have on my scalp handling my hair even with a very little undergrowth. How on earth will I be able to deal and live with this terrible pain everyday of my life. I fuss and scream a lot at the salon, you can even hear my heartbeat and deep great breathing at each hold on my scalp. If I ever go natural, braids or weaves will leave me in coma (exaggeratingly true)

2. How will my hair look in the early growth stages. I will be looking unkempt on natural hair before my patients in the clinic. Some of mine, might think am going crazy.

3. How am I going to adjust my schedule to make out time/hours to detangle, wash and style my hair. My hair might become all about hair, hair, hair!!!!!! Even God will not be happy with me.

4. Will my hair ever grow that long to make a big bun. Do I need to wait an eternity for what's never gonna be?

5. Then, here comes the fear of running out of products. Will I need to get assorted types of hair products to keep up in the journey. With a limited budget?

6. If my hair will be the 4C type, I might never be able to endure into the journey.

7. I am going to look like a 12 year old primary school girl. I already look quite tooyoung for my age (thats a plus ,tho). But what happens when I get my big chop? These kids are not going to know their Anty.

8. What if it goes out of trend? I do not chase after trends, I go for what's good and beautiful. But it does matter. Will I look old school when it goes out of trend years later?

9. I might end up having a bent back and developed hand muscles that looks like that of a man from constant DIY hair care.

10. Will I have flying insects chasing after me and hovering over me when I use food recipes on my hair.

11. Then the fear of making a single mistake that will ruin all my longterm efforts.

I can go on and on , if you let me.

Yeah! I know what naturalistas might be thinking now, that most of their fears are not real... Anyhow you see it, some might have, at one time,  felt this way..

My advice to all to-bes
Make sure you are emotionally, psychologically, socially, mentally, physically, financially, physically WHOLLY READY before you start your Natural HairJourney.

This was a decision I thought I would never take. Never say Never!

You can freely express your views. If you had/have anxieties too, share with me and our lovely readers in the comment box below.

My Overnight Heatless Curls

With all these questions coming my way each day, 'Is that your hair?', 'What kind of weavon or hair extension did you use?', 'Can I touch your hair to confirm?' , I guess, I will soon make a T-shirt with the write up, 'Yes, Its My Hair'. Lol..... That will answer the question before it is asked.

Anyway I ain't complaining. I appreciate all commendations about my hair. I have come to realize that people appreciate clean, healthy well kept natural hair whether it permed/relaxed, fully natural or transitioned hair.

I quit heat styling on my natural hair a very longtime after I learnt that heat styling makes the hair brittle and damages it especially for a relaxed hair that is already fragile. To achieve my gorgeous hair curls I go for the overnight heatless curls.

The uphair do is my favorite easy DIY hair style and it gives my hair that fuller look. That will be the finished look  for the 3 methods in the tutorial on how i get my heatless curls below.

First, start with a damp hair. For me, after washing my hair with shampoo, I use my homemade leave-in-conditioner(Olive oil and coconut oil) on my damp hair not wet hair and then style.

1. Bantu knot
Make Bantu knots in small sections and unravel it the next day

2.a. Use Perm rods / Flexi rods
For more defined curls, use smaller rods/rollers. Twist and roll the hair in small sections from the ends of the hair .

b. Twist two small sections of the hair and roll onto the rods/rollers.

Next, let it air dry overnight while you sleep.

With the bobby pins and a small comb, dress the hair carefully from the back up and hold with the pins to make an uphair do. Be careful not to in ravel the curls to the end with the comb in the process.
Now you can separate the curls with your fingers, fluff , tuck and pin where necessary.

This hair style can stay up a whole week. During the week , you might just need to redress the back of the hair and repin, add shine to it with your hairspray and finger comb a bit, tuck and repin.

How do you make your own gorgeous hair curls? Tell us about it.

DIY - These hair masks came to my rescue!!

I was absolutely amazed at the quick results i had using these hair mask therapy. I guess i will have to tell you all about the story after introducing you to the hair masks. Its easy to make and with affordable natural kitchen ingredients.

1. Egg Hair Mask

1 tbsp Olive Oil
1 tsp honey
1 tsp coconut oil

How to use it

First shampoo your hair and rinse out shampoo with cool water.
Mix all the above ingredients together well.
Apply the mixture to your hair and scalp carefully.
Cover hair with shower cap for 1hr or more.
Rinse  hair thoroughly with water and squeeze out dripping water.
Take another small amount of coconut oil and moisturize into scalp and hair.
Air dry or tie hair with a cloth until it dries or style it and leave to dry.

2. Coconut oil Hair Mask

Recipe
Coconut oil
Olive Oil
Shea butter (melted)

Procedure

Massage your hair with the sheabutter and leave it on overnight.
Shampoo your hair the next day.
Mix the remaining ingredients together and apply to your hair and scalp.
Cover hair with shower cap and leave for about 1hr.
Then wash off hair with cool water.
Squeeze out excess water.
Moisturize hair with coconut oil.
Air dry or tie hair with a T-shirt, satin pillow case or style on damp hair.

How often can you mask hair?
Once a week or twice a week depending on the extent of hair damage.

Note: Keep hair moisturized in between the mask.

About the story
In the first few years I left home to tertiary institution, I got so busy and stressed  out often with academic life. I paid no proper attention to hair until I left with dry, dull colored scanty hair. The worst awakening was a big hair fall at the center back part of my hair that looked like an empty space of dry land in a bush. I felt disappointed in the fact that I couldnt take care of my hair well myself. I worried about how Mom will feel about this when i return home after school sessions.

Then I remembered that natural hair therapy does work wonders. So i started natural hair therapy which includes the above mentioned hair mask. I was surprised how fast my hair got restored within a few months.

I promised to be more careful from then on. Here is a picture of what my hair looks like after masking with coconut oil mask, then twist rolled, and allowed to dry overnight for heatless curls.
